How to Prepare a Piano for Moving
Most of a good piano move happens before anyone lifts anything.
Clear and Measure the Route
Remove rugs, furniture and anything on the walls along the path. Measure the narrowest doorway and the tightest turn, and note any threshold or step that isn't obvious in a photo. If there are stairs, count them and photograph the landings.
Prepare the Piano Itself
Close and secure the keyboard lid, remove sheet music, photos and decorative items, and lock the casters if the piano has them. Don't attempt to remove the legs of a grand yourself — that's done on the padded board with the instrument supported.
What Movers Do on the Day
Uprights are wrapped, strapped and moved on a piano dolly. Grands come off the legs onto a padded piano board, get strapped and travel on their side, then are reassembled and positioned at the destination.
Tuning and Acclimation
Every move affects tuning, and Florida humidity changes room to room. Let the piano settle for two to three weeks in its new location, then schedule a technician. Moving companies transport pianos; tuning and regulation belong to a piano technician. See our piano moving service for what we handle.
